Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

“What are you looking for?”  That’s the question today’s Liturgy puts before us.

“What are you looking for?”  Is a question addressed to US, but also a question we address to God.  Put another way “What do you and I and God want to do with the lives we’ve been given?”

St. Augustine was known to say. “Our hearts are restless, till they rest in God.”  Put another way, our hearts always seek more until we encounter the source of life.

And in the Gospel today we hear the disciples ask Jesus, “Where are you staying?” which is another way of saying, “We want to know more.”

And deep down within all of us, we want to know more… more about the important things of life.  We are all searching to some degree.

Take the cable technician who was here this week to upgrade my TV to digital, with whom a conversation was begun.  A conversation that centered on his search for a place for God in his life and his family’s life.

A conversation that shared his efforts to do the right things for his wife and child.  His search, his journey continues, as does ours.

But as we conversed, the thing that seemed to comfort him was that fact that God is with him, cares for him and his family and it is OK to press on getting to know more…

I guess I looked at our conversation (along with the 3 Matthew Kelly books that I gave him), as something akin to John the Baptist in our Gospel today who points the way to Jesus, the Lamb of God.

Hopefully our conversation pointed this cable technician and his family a step closer to getting to know the Lord.

“What are we looking for?”  We certainly respond through the choices we make big and small.  But, as Baptized people we need to continue to look to GOD and ask, what are you looking for from me… from us?

It is easy to get caught up in living our lives, pretty much like everyone else and those important moments of life, those achievements of life are not to be missed.

YET, we need to go deeper and deeper in knowing the Lord and in joining in being and living as his Disciples today and into the future.

God continues to speak to us in many ways, the Scriptures, silence, the conversations of life, the need of the moment, to name a few…

May we, like the Disciples of the past, the Parishioners of the past 150 years here at St. Mary’s, Crescent continue to accept the invitation to come and see and know the Lord…

And maybe most importantly, be changed for the better; changed forever.
